Iron Chef at Stony Brook

Originally imported from Japan, Iron Chef is a televised cooking contest in which invited chefs compete against one of several chefs, the “Iron Chefs,” who are regularly employed by the show. This past Wednesday, in the Student Union , Stony Brook Campus Dining featured its version of the show, one that was quite different from the original.

Four teams of three students, each assisted by a Campus Dining chef, were in competition with one another. “Twenty teams signed up,” Vinnie Gentile, director of marketing for Campus Dining, said. “Then there was an online campus vote. These four were the winners.” The teams were Hungry Hungry Hippos, Team Swarly, Byahh!, and Bull Moose Party. They were competing for a donation to their favorite cause.

Spring Carnival at Stony Brook

On May 2, the Student Activities Board held its spring fever carnival, one of the last events of the school year. Several hundred students crowded the plaza in front of the SAC, enjoying themselves while eating hotdogs and hamburgers.

The food was provided free by Tudor Village Deli. “Were giving out 1600 hamburgers and hotdogs,” John Killoran, the deli’s owner said as he worked the grill. “These students can really eat.” He had no problem handing out all that meat. “We do lots of business with Stony Brook University,” he explained.

One of the longest lines was at the tee-shirt airbrushing site. Two artists stood at easels, spraying designs onto the tee-shirts. “These are professional artists, hired by the SAB,”

Bioengineering at Stony Brook

Recent advances in technology have led to numerous applications in the life sciences, giving rise to a new field, bioengineering. Bioengineers are involved in the study and application of typical engineering notions, such as fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, and materials science to the development and design of devices that have biologically oriented applications.

At Stony Brook, graduate students and scientists from all over the world have come to pursue bioengineering studies covering a wide range of applications, making it a major center for work in this area. Some of these researchers recently agreed to discuss themselves and their work.

Israel Memorial Day at Stony Brook

This past Monday about a dozen students and staff gathered around an Israeli flag at the Hillel Memorial Garden for a brief ceremony. They were marking Israel Memorial Day, the date on which Israelis remember soldiers killed in its various wars and actions since its founding in 1948. Despite the presence of a rabbi, the event was essentially secular in nature.

The garden is located between the Student Activities Center and the Psychology A building. Those taking part first took turns reading verses from modern poetry. They then read brief biographical pieces about soldiers who had been killed in various actions. Among the dead was Kern Tendler, who, they read, had been killed in 2006 during the Second Lebanon war by “Hezbollah terrorists.” They ended the ceremony with a contemporary prayer, read in English, followed by the Israeli national anthem, sung in Hebrew.

Fair Trade Show at Stony Brook

This past Wednesday the Island Harvest Committee, which is sponsored by the Stony Brook Pre-medical Society, hosted a food tasting event in the Student Union. Representatives of Trader Joe’s, Costco and Whole Foods Market attended. Stony Brook Campus Dining was also present. The theme was organic and fair-trade items.

“Here we are partnering with Oxfam to increase hunger and fair-trade awareness,” Brianna Burge, the committee director, said. “And we also sponsor an end-of-semester food drive.” She explained that ordinary trade gives impoverished farmers a too small share of the profits, while fair-trade goods are distributed and marketed in a manner that “gives them the money they deserve.” Read more…

Internship Expo at Stony Brook

Internships provide students with the real world experience they don’t get in the classroom, giving them the opportunity to decide whether their career choices are the appropriate ones and to explore alternatives. Further, from some internships students can get academic credits and can even earn money.

There are other advantages that accrue from internships. Many employers look for internship experience in their applicant’s résumés. It is an indication of serious commitment on the part of a potential employee. Also, only about 20 percent of employment opportunities are advertised publicly. The rest are filled through networking, and there is no better opportunity to begin networking than through internships. Demonstrating reliability through a well-performed internship is a great way to develop the contacts and positive references that can lead to future employment.

For these reasons the Career Center, located in the Melville Library, is eager to further the internship process. Every term, it implements this by presenting its Internship Expo, during which students and campus agencies are given the opportunity to get to know one another.

This term, the event occurred on March 24 in the Wang Center. After they had registered at the front desk, students could explore the available opportunities by wandering between tables staffed by personnel from almost a dozen groups. Everyone was pleased with the outcome.

Multi Cultural Show at Stony Brook

When the doors finally opened on Stony Brook’s 6th annual multicultural show, the first thing everyone gravitated to were the trays of steaming food lining the far wall of the auditorium. There was palpable disappointment when Cheryl Chambers, the Associate Dean & Director of Multicultural Affairs, told everyone to find a seat. “The food is not being distributed now,” she announced. But everyone complied.

Body Image at Stony Brook

Can Mattel’s Barbie Doll be drafted to help improve anyone’s self image? As counter intuitive as that might seem, Kadhambari Sridhar thinks it’s possible. This past Wednesday the Irving College Residential Assistant brought about ten students together in the college’s lounge, promising them a Barbie party, although a few Kens were also present, but delivering more.

Assisting her was Anna Ware, a pre-doctoral intern at Stony Brook’s counseling and psychological services. “Sridhar asked to help with a discussion of body image,” she said. Before the students got to work with their dolls, they listened to Ware explain how their images of what they believe they should be like are shaped by external forces, mainly the media. Her evidence for that came from a series of videos.

Barbie’s notoriety originates in the argument that she promotes an unrealistic idea of body image for young girls, despite her 1997 redesign. But it was just that notoriety that Sridhar was exploiting. “The evening was a success because I feel I was able to get the residents together for a learning experience,” she said. It was also her major project as RA. “I spent $120 out of the $200 I am budgeted for the term,” she added. That sum got her seven Barbies and three Kens, plus an assortment of accessories.  Read more…
